What is Beyond Bias?

Our brains create images of what is familiar. What is most familiar to our brains is what we see in the numerous images and realities we are faced with every day ‚- what is, or what is perceived as, ‚“more normal.‚” This leads us to form biases. Biases create three harmful effects related to social identities: stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Unfortunately, we are all susceptible to developing biases, and, over time, it can cause immense damage to both individuals and social groups. Although biases are a natural response to the world around us, there are steps that we can take to identify our biases and work to overcome them in our personal and professional lives!
