Target Learner: This Program aims to provide knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Ship Security Officer (SSO), as defined in section A-V/5, A-VI-/VI of the STCW.
The International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea -SOLAS - Chapter XI-2
“Special measures to enhance maritime security” introduces and makes mandatory, the requirements of ‚ÄúThe International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code”.
This Code also makes it mandatory for Port Facilities to introduce security measures so as to enhance security in ports. These requirements have been adopted and written into the legislation of Contracting Governments and are embodied in flag state regulations (For example: the SA Merchant Shipping Maritime Security Regulations, 2004, and the SA Code of Maritime Qualifications – SAMSA Code).
The Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeepers Convention, STCW ’95, and more specifically the Manila amendments, further lay down the standards to which a Ship Security Officer must be trained.
