Managing Obesity to Improve Health: New Drugs, Old Drugs

Obesity continues to increase in prevalence nationwide, resulting in the worsening of other disease states, such as heart failure, diabetes, and cardiovascular events. Studies have shown a reduction in weight can lead to fewer cardiovascular events and decrease the risk of complications associated with co-morbid conditions. Over the past 3 years, there has been progress in the use of medications for assisting patients in losing weight. However, the guidelines have lagged in adding these agents and where they may fit in therapy. Because of this, there are many healthcare professionals that do not realize the options for weight loss, when to utilize them, and most importantly, how they should be used as an adjunct to non-pharmacologic management strategies. This activity reviews all the pharmacologic options in the US market that aid patients in losing weight. It will discuss where medications may fit in therapy, and who would benefit from each medication based on a patient-centered care approach. It will also discuss the risks associated with the use. In addition, non-pharmacologic options and their roles in a holistic care plan for weight loss will be included.
