How urban spaces can preserve history and build community | Walter Hood | TED Talk

In his TED Talk “How urban spaces can preserve history and build community,” landscape architect Walter Hood talks about the concept of “e pluribus unum,” or “out of many, one,” and how urban landscapes and innovative design thinking can help to preserve memories and diverse perspectives. He shares five simple concepts he has developed through his work as an educator and designer and highlights five projects that show how memory and history can be preserved through urban space architecture. Hood also discusses the idea of “two-ness,” the notion that people have to navigate the world through the eyes of others and that this can make us strong and resilient. Hood argues that the ambiguity in unresolved things allows for conversation, and it is through this conversation that we can build community, understanding and social change.
