In Noreena Hertz’s TED talk called “How to use experts — and when not to,” she discusses the dangers of relying too heavily on experts. Hertz explains that we have become addicted to listening to experts, seeking their certainty and assuredness in a world of extreme complexity. However, experts can and do get things wrong, and she reminds us that it is imperative that we keep our independent decision-making abilities intact. Hertz points out that experts tend to form rigid camps, often influenced by prevailing social and cultural norms, as well as money. Hertz encourages us to rebel against the status quo, switch on our independent problem solving abilities, and become more open-minded and democratic.
