In the TED Talk “How to turn off work thoughts during your free time,” psychologist Guy Winch talks about how work stress often follows us home, and the importance of turning off work thoughts during our free time. He explains how ruminating, or obsessively thinking about work, is harmful to our emotional well-being and can even lead to physical health problems. Winch suggests that we should focus on problem-solving and creative thinking about work, rather than simply obsessing over unfinished tasks or anxiously worrying about the future. He encourages keeping a journal to track how much time you spend ruminating and to consciously make an effort to turn off work thoughts during your free time to improve your overall stress management and work/life balance, and to avoid burnout.
