One of the most common distorted thinking patterns is cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance occurs when two cognitions (beliefs, perceptions and attitudes) are inconsistent with one another. This results in mental discomfort that can lead to a need for change and an effort to reduce or eliminate such conflict within oneself through any means necessary. During these times you may notice your tendency to blame yourself for the situation where as it’s really something else on account of blaming others instead which leads into other damaging coping mechanisms like feeling resentment towards them or not taking care of yourself because this would be just too much work otherwise.
