In this TED-Ed animation, Gil Weinberg asks the question “Can robots be creative?” By showcasing examples of artificial creativity, specifically scores and music created by artificial intelligence (AI), Weinberg explores the nature of creativity itself. Drawing on ideas from Ada Lovelace and other historical figures who studied AI and robotics, Weinberg discusses the critical factor of originality in ideas, and what exactly makes an idea “original.” Through a form of evolutionary algorithms known as genetic algorithms, Weinberg illustrates that AI can mimic biological evolution to create original ideas - ideas we may even consider art.
