Addressing Sexist Behavior is an audio-only course. Many of us have been taught to call out sexist behavior when we see it. But is calling out sexism in the workplace actually an effective way to handle it? This course is part of the Let’s Talk White Guys series, a collection of podcasts featuring conversations around racism, sexism, bad behavior, and privilege as a means to expand the “straight White male” perspective on responsibility and necessary change. In this course, you’ll hear from Jamie Winship, a former Washington D.C. police officer; Mike Robbins, an executive coach, author, and motivational speaker; and Tony Schwartz, founder and CEO of The Energy Project. Drawing from their experiences as White men, they discuss the ways that “calling out” falls short when it’s met with defensiveness, and they introduce an alternative: “calling in.” You’ll learn about different methods for addressing discrimination in the workplace and get insight into why some methods don’t have the desired effect. You’ll also encounter a more empathy-centered way to prioritize inclusion and education when correcting discriminatory actions. Finally, you’ll learn the role self-acceptance plays in reducing defensive reactions. After this course, you’ll be more adept at handling sexist behavior in a way that makes a lasting impact and normalizes constructive criticism.
