Microaggressions in Gender-Based Discrimination

Despite efforts to foster equality, gender microaggressions persist in the workplace. One of the reasons for the continued gender inequality might be rooted in the fact that discrimination has transformed into subtler forms, which are more difficult to detect and hence go unreported. But this subtle gender discrimination can be as detrimental as overt discrimination.

In the case of subtle gender microaggressions, females or marginalized groups tend to internalize the experience and perceive it as their own shortcoming. Hence, microaggressions might be even more stressful than overt discrimination for the target, as it negatively affects cognitive functioning, leading to higher levels of stress, anxiety, and insecurity.
