In this TED-Ed animation, Elizabeth Cox explores the question “Can you outsmart the slippery slope fallacy?” Through a detailed analysis of the “falling domino principle” involving the feared spread of communist control from Vietnam throughout the world, Cox illustrates the slippery slope fallacy and how it can negatively influence decision making. Cox uses this example to demonstrate that extreme outcomes are not inevitable, even if they are possible - in order to help us improve our critical thinking and problem solving skills when faced with such possibilities. Cox explains that by supporting an argument with an extreme conclusion, whether it is positive or negative, one is not arguing in good faith. Instead, they are likely trying to influence emotions to spark a specific reaction that benefits their position.
