In his TED Talk titled “How frustration can make us more creative,” Tim Harford tells the story of how a mistake made by the Cologne Opera House resulted in Keith Jarrett having to play on an unplayable piano. Jarrett initially wanted to cancel the concert but decided to play anyway. The resulting performance, now known as the Koln Concert, became the best-selling solo jazz album in history. Harford argues that obstacles and difficulties can actually improve creativity and performance, citing examples from cognitive psychology and rock ‘n’ roll. For example, research has shown that certain obstacles, such as difficult fonts, can improve learning by forcing people to work harder and think more. This TED Talk will aim to improve your problem solving and innovation.
