The TED-Ed animation “Why incompetent people think they’re amazing” with David Dunning helps viewers determine how to evaluate their own performance. How good are you with money? What about reading people’s emotions? Dunning begins by explaining why knowing how our skills stack up against others is useful in many ways. However, he also notes that research suggests we’re not very good at evaluating ourselves accurately, and we frequently overestimate our own abilities. He explains the phenomenon known as the Dunning-Kruger effect and how it comes from people not understanding their deficits. This is a great video to help viewers develop better mental agility and emotional intelligence, and to learn more about the importance of feedback, performance management and talent development when it comes to ourselves and others.
