HIPAA: What is HIPAA

Created in 1996 The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or (HIPAA) is a landmark piece of legislation that was primarily introduced to address one particular issue: Insurance coverage for individuals that are between jobs. Without HIPAA, employees faced a loss of insurance coverage when they were between jobs. A secondary goal of HIPAA was to prevent healthcare fraud, to ensure that all protected patient healthcare information is properly secured, and that access is restricted to authorized individuals.
