Pronouns refer to how we address people in the third person. Using someone’s correct pronouns, like “she/her” or “they/them,” demonstrates respect for their identity. Misgendering someone by using the wrong pronouns can invalidate their identity.
Companies can promote inclusivity by encouraging employees to share pronouns in profiles/signatures. Individuals can normalize pronouns by offering their own when asking others. If you use the wrong pronoun, apologize, correct yourself, and commit to getting it right. Using correct pronouns signals respect, validates individuals’ identities, and creates a more inclusive workplace.
