Foundations of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information System Mapping (GIS) helps organizations identify and solve problems in a fraction of the time they are used to. In this course, taught by Jennifer Harrison, President of TeachMeGIS and a consultant in the GIS field for nearly 30 years, you’ll recognize the value of using GIS to solve problems and master its intricacies. You’ll start by explaining the essential elements of a GIS and describe attribute tables and some of the ways they are used in map display and for analysis. You’ll learn all about raster data and lidar data and how it can be used to make a 3D model of real-world features. You’ll discover overlay analysis and you’ll be able to describe situations in which spatial queries can be used to help answer complicated questions. Because GIS maps, data, and tools are shared across an entire organization, you’ll even be able to explain how GIS allows team members across the organization to work together on one true source of data. After this course, you’ll be able to comprehend the basics of GIS, recognize its core concepts and learn how you can get started with GIS programs.
