This course reviews new pharmaceutical agents in primary care and can be taken by anyone interested in the topic, but offers continuing education (CE) credit for United States healthcare practitioners in pharmacy, nursing, and dental professions. The FDA approved 50 new pharmaceutical agents in 2021, with 54% being first in class. This means that over half of the new agents entering the market are unfamiliar to healthcare professionals who must be educated on how they align with current management guidelines. This presentation focuses on pharmaceutical agents associated with Ambulatory Care practice models, which represent the majority of those approved in 2021. The discussion is organized by organ systems, allowing participants to apply this new knowledge to existing management guidelines, such as those for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Each pharmaceutical agent will be presented with details on class designation, mechanism of action, dosing, clinical efficacy, side effects, and cost information. At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will receive practice recommendations and insights on how to stay current with practice standards in this fast-paced healthcare environment.
