When different companies merge, we often think of the positives, such as improved efficiency, growth, and expansion into new markets. But merging the cultures within those organizations can be trickier to accomplish. Done poorly, those diverse cultures won’t integrate well, causing tension and presenting challenges for the potential new company to thrive. Researchers from the University of Maryland, Ivey Business School and other institutions have identified the reasons why mergers often fail and have pinpointed effective methods for integration. Principally, this means assessing whether the two companies are either ‚Äútight” or ‚Äúloose” and how these distinct cultures can unite. Diverse corporate cultures can and do merge positively, and there are four key tips which researchers suggest can bridge the divide.
