Genitourinary: Removing Indwelling Catheters

An indwelling urinary catheter, also known as a Foley catheter or a retention catheter, is a tube inserted into the bladder through the urethra and remains in the bladder, allowing urine to drain continuously into a drainage bag. Before removing an indwelling catheter, ask the nurse to tell you the amount of fluid that had been used to inflate the balloon and prepare the bladder to prevent temporary incontinence.
